 Sexual Health Advocate

 

We are currently seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Sexual Health Advocate. Comunidades Unidas (CU) is a non-profit organization based in West Valley City. CU is an organization dedicated to empowering the Latinx community in Utah to recognize and achieve their own potential and become a positive force for change in the larger community. 

 

The Sexual Health Advocate will be responsible for coordinating CU’s sexual health program. The Sexual Health Advocate will work with community members, Promotoras, Community Health Workers and stakeholders to advocate for policies at the local and state level that systemically eradicate the challenges that our community experiences when trying to access sexual health resources and information. The Sexual Health Advocate will  be part of  a team of highly dedicated social justice advocates working towards a just and equitable Utah where immigrants are fully engaged in the economic, social, and political issues that affect us.

 

The ideal candidate will:

 

  • Have a strong sense of social justice as a process, not an outcome

  • Rooted in the understanding that our community doesn't need a voice, we have one. What we need is to get comfortable using it and for those around us to listen

  • Have prior knowledge and/or experience working and understanding the needs and disparities of the LGBTQ+ community

  • Be a Promotora or a Community Health Worker or interest in becoming one and taking the CU Promotora training

  • Take the CU Sexual Health training of 7 sessions

  • Understand what a Promotora is or willingness to learn

  • Be aligned with the mission and vision of the organization

  • At least two years of experience in community outreach or similar field

  • Demonstrated commitment to community wellness, health and social justice

  • Computer proficient

  • Excellent communication skills both, oral and written, English and Spanish

  • Understanding and familiarity with the United States and Latinx/Hispanic cultures  and understand the barriers to access, needs, disparities and intersectionalities within the community

  • Social skills

  • Schedule flexibility on weekends and after office hours

  • Transportation availability

  • Possess outstanding organizational skills and have experience maintaining records and files up to date

  • Be self-motivated, flexible and driven

  • Be resourceful, have the ability to to utilize independent judgment and the ability to balance multiple priorities effectively

  • Be able to work and communicate efficiently with other team members

  • Be bilingual, Spanish and English 



Main Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
 

  • Coordinate the sexual health program. This means modifying and updating sexual health curriculum, teaching  it to groups of Promotoras and Community Health Workers

  • Coordinating Sexual Health Promotoras teaching the curriculum to community members

  • Educating community members with positive information about sexual health 

  • Creating partnerships with other organizations to uplift the voice of the community about sexual health barriers and concerns

  • Create educational material about sexual health

  • Planning and coordinating education through various means such as social media, mass media, workshops, trainings

  • Maintain and track information about referrals and education

  • Coordinate and organize with community through the principles of Community Organizing, Transformational Organizing, Popular Education, and World-Traveling (Maria Lugones)

  • Enforce community organizing principles within projects and CU members 

  • Rooted in the understanding that our community doesn't need a voice, we have one. What we need is to get comfortable using it and for those around us to listen

  • Identify with promotoras and community members a policy at the local or state level that will ensure Latinx in the state can have access to a better sexual health life


 

Additional Information:

  • This is a full-time job  (40 hrs/wk). CU’s work hours are Monday - Thursday 8 am - 6 pm.

  • Annual Salary for this position is $32,760
